Emergence

In Emergence (2015), a theme based in a minor mode struggles to assert itself against a more strident and tension filled harmonic palette. The struggle is accentuated spatially, as the theme is mostly presented in one of four separate quartets that are to be placed on four sides of the performance space. Eventually the theme isolates itself and brightens, albeit quietly with echoes of the earlier tension still resounding. “Emergence” was composed for the violin studio of Kirsten Yon at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston for a premiere performance at the 2015 Texas Music Educators Association Conference.
