Catalytic Concerto (1993) was premiered at the Univ. of Texas at Austin in 1993 by the University of Texas at Austin graduate saxophone quartet. The title of the work is a pun on the term catalytic converter, which is a part of the exhaust system of a car that alters the emissions by chemically combining them with an enzyme in the converter so they are less harmful to the environment. Much like this process, this work combines two types of material – a set of harmonies and a contrasting scale – so they are completely intertwined by the end.
