Play is essential for children, as well as adults, because it substantially contributes to our cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being. In order to celebrate this important but often neglected human activity, Rumpus Room (2019) seeks to capture the joyful and carefree feelings one has when fully engaging in play. The title comes from the popular name for a room used for games, parties, and recreation.

Rumpus Room is scored for string orchestra and was commissioned by the Houston Youth Symphony’s String Orchestra and its directors, Carolyn Vandiver and Ann Victor.
